Programme Description

The programme aims to familiarise a new generation of young US-Americans with Europe, and Germany in particular, allowing them to gain first-hand professional experience. The candidates are committed to strengthening German-American relations. Fellows are typically striving for leading positions with a medium-term perspective in politics, the administration, business or the media of their home country.

The fellowship combines theory and practice. The fellows get to know Germany as well as Europe while working in their respective career fields and participating in intensive seminars. During the planning and realisation phases of the work stay the Foundation expects the fellows to show a high level of personal initiative.

Target Group

early-career leaders from the United States who want to have a stake in shaping the transatlantic relations striving for leading positions with a medium-term perspective in politics, the administration, business, the media or the non-profit sector of their home country

Academic Requirements

degree course, usually graduate degree (Master's degree) in the areas of law, political science, cultural- or communication studies, economic sciences, urban and regional planning or journalism

up to 15 fellowships per year

8 or 11 months

Scholarship Value

  • monthly stipend of up to EUR 3,700, including family-, travel- and accommodation expenses
  • two high-level work phases at leading institutions or enterprises in Germany over a period of several months
