DAAD is proud to announce the winners of the 2020 DAAD/GSA Best Book and Article Prizes awarded on October 3rd, 2020, at the 44th Annual Conference of the German Studies Association (held online):

Astrid M. Eckert (Dept. of History, Emory University) is the winner of this year's prize for the best book in History or Social Sciences published in 2019. Her book West Germany and the Iron Curtain: Environment, Economy, and Culture in the Borderlands was published by Oxford University Press. The Book Prize Committee was chaired by James M. Brophy (University of Delaware) and included Belinda Davis (Rutgers University) and Ofer Ashkenazi (Hebrew University of Jerusalem).

Tobias Boes (Dept. of German and Russian Languages and Literatures, University of Notre Dame) is the winner of this year's prize for the best book in Germanistik or Cultural Studies published in 2019. His book Thomas Mann’s War: Literature, Politics and the World Republic of Letters was published by Cornell University Press. The Book Prize Committee was chaired by B. Venkat Mani (University of Wisconsin, Madison) and included Claudia Breger (Columbia University) and Paul Fleming (Cornell University).

Carl Gelderloos (Dept. of German and Russian Studies, Binghamton University) received an honorable mention for his book Biological Modernism: The New Human in Weimar Culture, also nominated in the category Germanistik or Cultural Studies and published in 2019. His book was published by Northwestern University Press.

Joseph Perry (Dept. of History, Georgia State University) was awarded this year's prize for the best article in any discipline published in the German Studies Review in 2019. His article “Love Parade 1996: Techno Playworlds & the Neo-Liberalization of Post-Wall Berlin” appeared in the GSR, Vol. 42 [No. 3], October 2019. The Article Prize Committee was chaired by Monica Black (University of Tennessee, Knoxville) and included Matthew Handelman (Michigan State University) and Kristin Kopp (University of Missouri).
