Eligibility Requirements
Scholarships are awarded to students currently enrolled full-time in a graduate program in all fields of study except German Studies, German Language and Literature or German Translation and Interpretation. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of their academic record and statements of projected academic and professional future.

As a rule, applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the US or Canada. Foreign nationals may be eligible if they have been full-time graduate students at a US or Canadian university for at least one academic year at the time of application.

Applicants must have completed three semesters of college German and have achieved an equivalent level of language proficiency (between A1 and B1) at the time of application.

Applicants who have received a DAAD summer language grant in the past three years are not eligible to apply.

Requirements must be met by the application deadline.
Terms of Award
DAAD will consider individual placement preferences, but grantees are requested to accept DAAD's final decision as to time and place.

The scholarship of approximately €2,300 includes tuition, accommodations (arranged by the host institute) and a cash allowance for meals and incidental expenses in full or in part, depending on the choice of location and accommodations. DAAD will provide health and accident insurance as well as a travel subsidy of €300-450.

Scholarship recipients are expected to devote their full attention to the course and may not concurrently undertake individual research. A written report is requested within four weeks of the end of the course.
Application Guidelines
The application form must be completed online, and you must send the application printout with your signature, your supplemental documents and materials to the DAAD New York. Every component of the application, with the exception of the recommendation letter, must be submitted in duplicate (one original, one photocopy); applications not submitted in duplicate will not be processed.

A complete application consists of the following parts. Please collate, but do not staple (do not staple any part of the application), each set of the application materials in this order:

  • The DAAD application form. Please answer all questions on the form, even if you refer to additional material.
  • A curriculum vitae (résumé).
  • A detailed statement (in English) of approximately 500 words explaining why the applicant wants to attend the intensive language course.
  • A recommendation letter written by a professor in the field of your degree study. It should not be from the same professor who evaluates your language proficiency. (Since most referees prefer to provide them in a sealed envelope, you may submit one original letter without the photocopy.)
  • Complete, official transcripts of all post-secondary studies. (You may open the official transcript to make a photocopy if obtaining two official ones costs you extra.)
  • DAAD language evaluation form ("Sprachzeugnis"). The language evaluation form can be found as the last page of the downloadable application form, and must be completed and signed by a faculty member of the German department at the applicant’s institution or by an official of a Goethe Institute.
  • A list of German language courses taken.
Complete applications should be sent to the DAAD New York office. Applications postmarked December 15, 2014 or earlier will be accepted; those with later postmarks cannot be processed.

Please note:
  • Incomplete applications cannot be processed.
  • Application materials will not be returned.
  • No reasons for a decision will be given.
