David Anlauff, percussion |

 |
 |
 |
David Anlauff earned his diploma in Jazz and Popular Music Undergraduate Studies at the University of Music & Performing Arts in Mannheim, 2005.He is currently enrolled in the Master’s program of Queens College in New York with the support of a DAAD scholarship. In the past 10 years, David has gained experiences playing all different kinds of music, such as jazz, classical, soul, Latin, rock and pop. During his time in Germany, he toured and appeared on TV with Jennifer Lopez, A-Ha, German Superstar Tobias Regner, Jewish Top Ten Act Maya Saban, John Hondorp (NL), and opened shows for Seal, Nena, Xavier Naidoo, the Spice Girls and Ronan Keating. David was one of the drummers in the German version of the ABBA Musical Mamma Mia, and his own trio Stormy Weather Connection just released their new album It’s About Time. Since moving to New York City, David has been concentrating on jazz drumming and is currently taking lessons from Gene Jackson (Herbie Hancock) and Sam Ulano (who has published over 2500 drum books).

Sornitza Baharova, violin |

 |
 |
Sornitza Baharova was born in 1983 in Sofia, Bulgaria. At the age of eight she moved with her family to Germany. She is a recipient of a DAAD fellowship to earn a Master’s degree at the Juilliard School in New York, studying with Prof. Joel Smirnoff. From 1995–2003 she was a pre-college student of Prof. Ulf Klausenitzer in Nürnberg. After completing the Abitur in 2003, she studied until 2007 at the HfM “Franz Liszt” in Weimar with Prof. Dr. F. Eichhorn. She has won prizes in several competitions, such as the “Lions Club” Competition and “Jugend musiziert” and, in 2007, served as the assistant concertmaster of the “Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester,” founded by Claudio Abbado. As a soloist, Ms Baharova has played with the “Hofer Symphoniker,” “Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester,” the “Sinfonietta Sofia,” and many others. Sornitza Baharova is a committed chamber musician and has played with prominent musicians, such as Prof. J.P. Maintz, Prof. Gerhard Schultz (Alban Berg Quartet) and Prof. Paul Roczeck.

Rainer Böhm, piano |

 |
 |
Rainer Böhm was born in 1977 in Ravensburg, Germany. In 1997 he began studying jazz piano at the Mannheim Music Academy with piano teacher Joerg Reiter. That same year, his trio was awarded first prize at the Ravensburg Jazz Competition. From 1998 to 2001 he performed with the Federal Youth Jazz Orchestra BuJazzO, which is conducted by Peter Herbolzheimer, and toured extensively through southeastern Europe. In 2007 he won first prize at the international piano solo competition in Freiburg and received a scholarship from DAAD to study at City College in New York. In December 2007, Mr Böhm’s most recent record Boehm-Huber-Daneck was selected “Best CD” by the magazines Stereoplay and Piano News.

Doren Dinglinger, violin |

 |
 |
Violinist Doren Dinglinger was born in 1981 in Stuttgart, Germany. Since her solo orchestral debut at age 10 she has performed on many of the world’s important stages, including Avery Fisher Hall in New York and Philharmonie Berlin. Ms. Dinglinger has won top prizes in many competitions, most recently the first prize in the Lions Clubs International Competition. After her graduation in 2007 from the music academy Hanns Eisler Berlin she came to New York with a grant from DAAD and is currently enrolled in the Master of Music program of the Juilliard School in New York, as a student of Ronald Copes. Ms. Dinglinger attended master classes with P. Amoyal, Z. Bron, A. Chumachenco, H. Krebbers, C. Tetzlaff, A. Rosand, R. Ricci and R. Kussmaul. She studied with A. Weithaas, W. König and U.Wallin. Ms. Dinglinger performs on a violin by J.B. Vuillaume, on loan from the Landessammlung Streichinstrumente Baden Württemberg.

Joe Hertenstein, percussion |

 |
 |
Born in 1977, Joe Hertenstein is currently using his DAAD fellowship to complete his Master's degree in Jazz Studies in New York City. Previously, he studied Jazz in Munich, Rotterdam, Berlin and Cologne. He has won prizes in a number of Jazz competitions including the Concours Ceramique Jazzcontest (2003, with the band Five Spotz), the NRW-Jazzart-Prize (2004, with the band Fantasmofonika). His festival appearances include Hoeilaart Jazzfestival Brussels, JekerJazzMaastricht, Leverkusener Jazztage, and others. From 2002 until 2007 Mr. Hertenstein taught drums at the Offene Jazzhausschule Cologne and privately. He currently performs with a number of bands, including Terence Ngassa Afro 6tet, VIEL, The Sideburns, James Choice Orchestra, and various Jazz groups. Mr. Hertenstein has worked with many German and international musicians such as Heiner Wiberny, Claudius Valk, Frank Gratkowski, Dieter Manderscheid, Dave King, Carlos del Junco, Werner Neumann, and many others. He toured Europe in 2004 and 2005 with world renowned blues harp player Carlos del Junco.

Benjamin Kraef, saxophone |

 |
Benjamin Kraef has studied jazz and saxophone at the Music Academy Hanns Eisler in Berlin, where he also earned his diploma in 2006. In 2007 he received a DAAD scholarship that enabled him to participate in the Master of Arts program at City College in New York. He has extensively performed with various groups, such as the Benjamin Kraef Quartet, and Mumble Jumble, a sextet that won the first prize at the Biberacher Jazzpreis in 2006. Mr. Kraef is the winner of the Yamaha Saxophone Contest, and he received second prize at the Jazzparade Fribourg, both in 2007. Being a member of the BuJazzO (the German youth jazz orchestra, led by Peter Herbolzheimer) for several years, he had the opportunity to tour throughout Namibia, South Africa, Poland and Germany. He has shared the stage with Lalo Schifrin, Gunther Schuller, Herb Geller, Phil Woods, Pee Wee Ellis, Jiggs Whigham, Joy Denalane, the RIAS Big Band and more.

Magnus Mehl, saxophone |

 |
 |
Magnus Mehl was born in 1980 in Rottweil in the South of Germany. He began to play jazz when he was about 14 years old. After graduating from high school, he studied jazz saxophone in Nuernberg, Amsterdam and Cologne with teachers like Dick Oatts, Ferdinand Povel, Steffen Schorn and Klaus Graf (from 2000 to 2006). During those years Mr. Mehl played with various projects in clubs and on festivals in Europe, Asia and South America. He worked with the German Youth Jazz Orchestra (BuJazzO, led by Peter Herbolzheimer) and a couple of German State Big Bands (Bavaria, Baden Wuerttemberg). Magnus Mehl had the honor to share the stage with greats like Randy Brecker, Paquito de Riviera, Buster Cooper and actress Katja Riemann. With his own band and his music he was also quite successful. In 2006 the Magnus Mehl Quintet won a major European contest, the International Getxo Jazz Competition (Bilbao, Spain), and came in second in the International Hoilaart Jazz Contest (Bressels, Belgium). In 2007, the band played in big festivals in Spain and Germany and was invited to tour in Serbia (supported by the Goethe Institut Germany). In the same year Mr. Mehl was selected as a finalist in the European Yamaha Saxophone Contest. He is currently living and studying in New York City on a DAAD scholarship.

Carolin Pook, violin |

 |
 |
Carolin Pook earned a double Master's degree (Violin/Drums) in Jazz Studies in 2006 at the Cologne Conservatory and is now using her DAAD fellowship to complete the Jazz Master's Program at Queens College in New York. With her trio Lillica (drums) and the Carolin Pook Quintett (violin), she performs her own compositions or free improvisations. Before moving to New York City, Ms. Pook lived in Berlin and performed all over Germany in all different kinds of music, especially contemporary classical. She has been a steady member of the string quartet "5356", she has performed with Peter Broetzmann, Benny Baily, Jimmy Woode, Junior Mance, Paul Kuhn, the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra and toured with the renowned Fantastischen Vier. She has been involved in various dance projects and has written music for short movies. Ms. Pook played the solo violin part in Helmut Eisels's "Naftule und der König," performed by the orchestra of the Saarländischer Rundfunk and the Stadttheater Aachen.

Ulrike Schmitz, violin |

 |
 |
Ulrike Schmitz, born in Germany in 1983, is using her DAAD fellowship to earn her Master's at the Manhattan School of Music New York, studying with Prof Pinchas Zukerman and Prof Patinca Kopec. At the age of three she had her first violin lessons and in 1998 she began studying under Prof. Ingolf Turban, with whom she later studied at the University of Music and Drama in Stuttgart. In 2004 she completed her degree in Stuttgart and did one year of postgraduate studies with prof. David Takeno at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She has won prizes in several competitions, such as the international Jan Kocian Competition (Czech Republic), Jugend musiziert and the Jakob Stainer violin competition (Germany). As a soloist, Ms. Schmitz has played with the Nuremburg Symphony Orchestra, the chamber orchestras of Corona and Bad Reichenhall, the Kiev Soloists at the Kiev International Festival, and many others.

Stefan Schultze, piano |

 |
Stefan Schultze was born 1979 in Hannover. As a composer and pianist he stylistically strives to combine elements of jazz and new music. Mr. Schultze studied with John Taylor, Paulo Alvares and Joachim Ullrich at the Hochschule für Musik Köln. In 2006, he was awarded with a grant to study composition at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, and in 2007 he won a DAAD grant to continue his studies in New York with Michael Abene, Garry Dial and Reiko Fueting. Mr. Schultze is founder of both the quintet Schultzing and the octet Oktoposse and he has been awarded numerous prizes including JazzIn (2003, 2004), Best International Jazz Band (2005, 2006), Biberacher Jazz Preis, and Jazz an der Donau—Next Generation. In 2007 Mr. Schultze's composition “Oracle Night,” recorded by his big band Stefan Schultze's Big Adventure received an honorable mention from the ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award. Since 2007, he is member of the prestigious BMI Jazz Composers Workshop under the tutelage of Jim McNeely and Michael Abene.

Kathrin ten Hagen, violin |

 |
Violinist Kathrin ten Hagen was born in 1982 in Steinfurt, Germany. At age 6 she received her first violin lessons from Dorothea Horvath and later from Midori Goto. Being only 15, she was accepted as a student by Professor Igor Ozim in Cologne, and in 2002 she became full-time student of Professr Antje Weithaas at the Universität der Künste in Berlin. In 2007 Ms. ten Hagen won a DAAD scholarship to study at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. Kathrin ten Hagen has already won several prestigious prizes, among them second place at the Internationalen Yfrah Neaman International Violin Competition in 1997, and in 2003 the competition of the Deutschen Musikinstrumentenfonds at the Deutschen Stiftung Musikleben, which entitles her to a violin from 1663 by Andreas Guanerius, Cremona.
