Jason from Portland State University in Oregon studied German at the University of Tuebingen from October 2004 to July 2005.
At the University of Freiburg in Germany, he hopes to study Old Norse and Middle High German in order to contextualize his knowledge of Old Germanic culture, while absorbing the culture and literature of modern Germany. Of particular interest is Old Germanic exile literature and modern stories of displacement and alienation.
A 1999 graduate of Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, with a B.A. in English, Jason Edwin Nickels is currently attending Portland State University, pursuing a second bachelor's in German. In 1997, Nickels became acquainted with Old English at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. He has conducted a study since that compares the earliest English literature to modern Western literature and attempts to explain how each addresses the apprehensions of their intended audiences--how literature in general addresses such apprehensions. Of particular interest is Old Germanic exile literature and modern stories of displacement and alienation. Nickels has attempted to bridge the gap between ages by continuing to work with Old English and Latin texts while staying abreast of contemporary pop culture: its movies, its music, its literature and its commercials. In 1998, he made the award winning "Wanderer," a film version of the eponymous Old English poem, but adapted to the 20th Century, and his latest script, portraying the pervasive effects of commercialism in modern America, has been filmed and is currently being edited in Seattle, Washington.
