Jennifer from Dickinson College in Pennsylvania studied German and Russian at the University of Bremen from February to July 2006.
In a course on immigration to Germany, Jennifer was particularly interested in the circumstances surrounding the arrival of "guest worker" family members in the 1960s and 70s. The rest of her curriculum included two Russian language classes, a course on German migration to the U.S., and a seminar on the now Russian-owned city Königsberg/Kaliningrad, where she discussed the Soviet settling of the region from 1945 to the early 1950s.
During her six-month stay, Jennifer traveled from Bremen to numerous German cities including Schwerin, Luebeck, Berlin, Dresden, Worpswede, and also participated in a tour to Vienna in Austria with other Dickinson College exchange students.
"I have, in fact, learned quite a lot and that what I’ve learned the best is closely tied to my goals and interests. My goals in choosing Russian and German as my majors were to speak and understand the two languages as well as possible to communicate relatively freely with people of a different culture.
The liberal arts approach has helped me realize that I personally am more cut out for linguistics than for political science or even literature studies, but that a background knowledge in all fields is essential to understanding the one field that I am interested in.
I realize now how necessary language is to understanding other cultures and personalities as well. I’m finally at a lingual level where I can say, I get it. Not just what people are saying, but how and why they’re saying it - the feeling and meaning behind the words."
