How has your time in Germany affected your academic/professional career path?
It was critical for my research and for academic career.
What's the most important piece of advice you could give a new DAAD grantee?
Engage the local community and general society as fully as possible.
What was your most dramatic experience of culture shock in Germany?
I came from a German-speaking home with a strong German orientation, but essentially pre-WWII. The first time I visited, the difference required some adjustment in approach and thinking.
Other than family/friends, what did you miss most while abroad? What do you miss from Germany now that you're back?
Not very much. I frequently go back and forth.
If you could go back and live your overseas adventure again, what would you do differently?
It was so long ago, but I don’t recall anything I would do much differently. Again, this is more relevant for someone more recently returned from a first time experience.
