DAAD grant(s): Annual Grant, 1980 Current occupation: Business owner Current city of residence: Palm Desert, California Contact: lbueermann@dc.rr.com
I did my undergraduate work in International
Relations at Stanford and in 1980 I recieved a DAAD grant for economics and politcal science in 1980 at the Institute
für Weltwirtschaft in Kiel. After a special "erlaubnis" from DAAD-Bonn, I worked with Draeger Werke, GmbH in Lübeck. Since returning to the US, I've run a number of different businesses. I currently own a small chain of restaurants with locations in Massachusetts and Nevada.
My DAAD grant was for me the continuation of many years of study abroad beginning with an exchange program in high school. The research, as well as work program, helped me solidify how I wanted to work. While working at Draeger, I realized I wanted to own and build my own business. I have a long way to go to match the breadth of Draeger's world wide operations (they also had a 150 year head start!). However, over the years I've adopted practices at my business that were once cutting edge innovative approaches at Draeger in the 80's (e.g. generous flex time, meal programs, training allowances).
On a personal note, many of the people I attended school with as well as worked with are still friends.
