How has your time in Germany affected your academic/professional career path?
I not only finished my dissertation but also gathered information that I still use for scholarly presentations and publications.
What's the most important piece of advice you could give a new DAAD grantee?
Make certain that they are fluent in German.
What was your most dramatic experience of culture shock in Germany?
I can’t say that I have ever had culture shock in Germany. I come from a largely German populated area (Pennsylvania Dutch country) and the unfamiliar in Germany was very familiar. The only culture shock that I have had is finding the changes in German society since 1963 when I first visited.
Other than family/friends, what did you miss most while abroad? What do you miss from Germany now that you're back?
I am not the homesick type. I have friends both in Germany and here. I miss items from the German cuisine (some I can get here) and especially the beverages. Being in a somewhat rural area I miss the access to books that I can find even in a relative rural nest like Marburg, my second home.
If you could go back and live your overseas adventure again, what would you do differently?
Probably nothing. Looking back on 10 years in Germany there are few things that I regret. I might think about traveling more, but then again I don’t do that here.
