Eligibility Requirements |

Scholars who hold a PhD (or equivalent) and have been working in research or teaching full-time at a United States university or research institution for at least two years after receipt of the doctorate are eligible.
Applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States.
Preference will be given to applicants in the social sciences, the natural sciences, engineering and professional schools, who are in mid-career and are under 46 years of age. Faculty members who teach in the fields of English, German or any modern languages or literatures are not eligible.
Applicants must have a basic knowledge of German and be able to demonstrate a need for acquiring a better proficiency in the German language for their future studies or research.
Applicants should not have previously studied in a German-speaking country for more than two months and/or received a grant to attend a German language course from DAAD or any other organization within the last three years.

 |
The scholarship amounts to approximately €1,700 for a four-week course. It provides tuition, room and partial board.
The Goethe-Institut will cover health insurance during the scholarship period.
International or domestic travel is not included.

Application Guidelines |

 |
All parts of the application should be typewritten or word processed. Applications should be submitted in duplicate (one original and one copy). Applications not submitted in duplicate cannot be processed. Please callate but do not staple any of the application materials.
A complete application consists of the items listed below and each copy of the application should be in this order:
DAAD application form. Please answer all questions on the form, even if you refer to additional material.
Curriculum vitae, not exceeding five pages.
A detailed statement explaining why the applicant wants to attend a Goethe Institute language course in Germany
A list of publications and a list of courses taught during the previous academic year.
Language evaluation (self-test form enclosed with application)

Complete applications should be sent to DAAD New York. Applications postmarked January 31, 2009 or earlier will be accepted; those with later postmarks cannot be processed.
The results of the competitions are usually announced in early April.
Please note:
Incomplete applications cannot be processed.
Application materials will not be returned.
No reason for a decision will be given.
