How has your time in Germany affected your academic/professional career path?
My time in Germany helps me to become a philosopher and global thinker in the pursuit of environmental sustainability. I believe that Germany is a Land of Novel Ideas and at the forefront of many emerging research ideas.
What's the most important piece of advice you could give a new DAAD grantee?
Enjoy learning and speaking the German language. Enjoy the great opportunities that German institutions and society has to offer to the fullest.
What was your most dramatic experience of culture shock in Germany?
I originally come from the Philippines and got my DAAD grant through German Embassy in the Philippines. Weather was a big adjustment at that time. I was surprised on how German language is structured, though there are similar words to English language but pronounced differently.
Other than family/friends, what did you miss most while abroad? What do you miss from Germany now that you're back?
Speaking with Germans though I am trying my best to read some German texts occasionally. I plan to go back to Germany in the near future through DAAD Re-invitation Program or as a Visiting Professor. I like to pursue further research in sustainability science and the great contributions of Germans to the pursuit of global sustainable development.
If you could go back and live your overseas adventure again, what would you do differently?
I will develop more research collaborations with well-known German researchers in sustainability science and its implications to global climate change at leading German research institutions. I will also travel a lot to experience the various opportunities that the Germany has to offer.
