Jason from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan, studied Mechanical Engineering and German at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich from September 2006 to June 2007.
Well, I'm finally more or less settled in here in Munich. The first week or so was pretty hectic, with trying to get my room somewhat organized, figure out where to go and what to do, taking my orientation classes, getting over the jet-lag, and it took me a few days before I finally got around to getting a coffee maker (life is so much better now that I have). I've finally gotten a little free time to write.
Anywho, I need to thank all of you for helping me to get here. I was a little disappointed in myself the first night, because I spoke English the entire night, getting to know the other students in the program. I decided that the next day I would speak more German, but got off to a bad start, before halfway through the day I figured out a great way to meet my German neighbors. I accidentally locked my key in my room. While trying to figure out what to do, I saw an open apartment door. So, I talked to the guy in the room, Jens (he's actually Danish, not German), and he took me to various different people, trying to find somebody who knew how to break into the room, because otherwise I would have to pay the janitor guy 20 euro to get me in. Eventually we got in (I left a small window open and we were able the door to the balcony open from there), then they invited me to a barbeque, with grilled veggies (I'm still a vegetarian, no wienerschnitzel). Since then I haven't spoken much English.
I run into my neighbor from two doors down, Vicky, all the time, and chat. She's been really helpful (she helped me get into my room), and has cooked me spaghetti and also gave me some sort of coffee snack cookie things.
I've been to Oktoberfest about 2 1/2 times so far. The first time was on the first Saturday, and it was way too crowded, so I went back during the week. Unless you're in one of the huge beer tents, it's basically just a really big fair. However, if you can get in a tent and find a spot to sit, it's a blast. Drinking the Maß beers (1 liter), eating pretzels, standing on the benches, and singing some Bavarian songs that I don't actually know.
I've gotten to know all the other JYMers pretty well, as well as a few other Germans, and one guy from Tunisia. I haven't been to any museums yet, or done much sight seeing. Been to busy getting to know people and enjoying the weather while it lasts.
