Kai from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, studied international relations at Humboldt University in Berlin from September 2006 to February 2007.
I went on exchange to Berlin hoping to learn a new language, meet new people, connect with my relatives and explore Europe—and the trip did not disappoint! Learning the language was probably the most valuable thing I took with me from the semester abroad. Although it's obviously never easy to learn a whole language, it helped to go to Berlin a month early for the intensive language program, where I met friends from across Europe who didn't necessarily speak English. School was often challenging but still not a massive time commitment, which meant I could get out and do things even during the week. Visiting the German part of my family, scattered from Munich to Jokkmokk, Sweden, was amazing! It wasn't all fun—the first month was spent extracting myself from the horrible university residence and finding a decent place to live—but even the worst debacles seem like learning experiences in retrospect. Overall it was an exciting, challenging and extremely rewarding experience!
