FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS - Applying for DAAD Grants and Scholarships
These pages will be continually expanded and updated in order to address the needs and issues of students, researchers, faculty, study abroad professionals and other friends of DAAD. Please contact DAAD New York if you have a question that's not answered here. Click here for FAQs on studying and living in Germany.
1. What if an application deadline falls on a weekend or holiday?

You get a break! If an application deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, you have until the next business day to postmark your application.
2. Does my application have to arrive in the DAAD offices by the deadline date, or is it OK if it's postmarked by the deadline?

We prefer to receive the applications and supplemental materials by the deadline date, but they would still be considered on time if your application is postmarked by the deadline date. A few of our scholarship programs do require the complete application to be received by the deadline date - so potential applicants should read the instructions carefully!
3. Is there an age limit to apply for a DAAD scholarship?

The age limit for our undergraduate programs has been abolished; eligibility for graduate programs is now defined in terms of time passed since the last academic degree or ABD status was earned. Applicants for graduate scholarships should have completed their Bachelor’s degrees no longer than six years before the application deadline. PhD candidates must have achieved ABD status no longer than four years before applying. Postdocs may apply until four years after completion of their PhD.
4. Do all copies of my transcript(s) have to be in sealed envelopes from my school's transcript office?

As stated in the application guidelines for most DAAD scholarship programs, applicants must submit multiple copies of their transcript(s). We recommend you request two official transcripts from your university. Open one and make copies of it, and submit the other one in the original sealed envelope.

For letters of recommendation, please ask your referee to make copies, and include the original and photocopies in a sealed envelope.
