Announcement: Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships
On July 6, 2010, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the establishment of the Government of Canada's Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships, a prestigious new program to attract and develop the world's best and brightest postdoctoral researchers in Canada. The new fellowships will be valued at CAD$70 000 per year (taxable) for two years. Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada and foreign citizens are eligible to apply.
The program will be delivered by the three federal granting agencies: the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). CIHR will administer the program on behalf of all three agencies. Unlike the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships, candidates are not required to be nominated first by a Canadian institution and recommended by the institution to the federal granting agencies for an award. Candidates for Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships can apply directly. The Banting Program is unique not only in the value of the award, but also in the nature of the fellowship. Candidates for a Banting Fellowship must demonstrate, beyond the excellence of their research, synergy between their research program and their host institution. As such, applications must be completed in full collaboration with the host institution. The deadline for candidates to submit a complete electronic application, including referee assessments, is November 3, 2010. International applicants must hold their fellowships at a Canadian institution. Canadian applicants who completed their degree at a Canadian institution may hold their fellowship at a Canadian or foreign institution. A small quota is reserved for Canadians to undertake their fellowship at a foreign institution. It is the responsibility of the Canadian candidate to organize the latter. Agency-specific interdisciplinary peer review committees will review all applications, using three selection criteria: Research excellence and leadership in the research domain; quality of the applicant’s proposed research program; and institutional commitment and demonstrated synergy between the applicant and the institution’s strategic priorities.
Final decisions with respect to the awarding of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships will be informed by advice from a Selection Board. The Board includes distinguished Canadian and international experts; and members of the federal granting agencies' Governing Councils. Successful candidates will be notified in late March 2011, and will be able to take up their fellowships anytime between April 1 and October 1, 2011. The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships strengthen an already powerful suite of funding programs that supports researchers at every stage of their career. The program builds research capacity in Canada, helping Canada achieve international competitiveness, in science and technology and other areas.
DFAIT will work with the federal granting agencies to strengthen the international dimension of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships. We encourage the missions to promote these new prestigious scholarships, as you have so ably done with the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships, using the “Imagine” brand. Edu-Canada will be sending missions a detailed marketing plan regarding the Vanier and Banting awards, which will include Canadian Studies Centres, alumni, key influential contacts in terms of top international students, etc. For further details, please see the official Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships website at http://www.banting.fellowships-bourses.gc.ca/ [1]. Please note as well the Questions and Answers (Q&As) specifically targeted at international students. Should you have any suggestions for improvement regarding the Q&As, your suggestions would be welcome at banting@researchnet-recherchenet.ca.
Information regarding federally-funded scholarships are listed on DFAIT’s International Scholarships website at www.scholarships.gc.ca. For questions specifically related to the new Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships, please contact (or direct interested parties to contact) the information desk at banting@researchnet-recherchenet.ca.

DAAD Young Ambassadors in Canada |
 |
 |
 |
 |
Meet the 2009/10 DAAD Young Ambassadors!
As deadlines approach for several DAAD scholarships and for many study abroad programs, many students are faced with questions about study and research in Germany. "Which university is best for my subject area?" "Can I get by in Germany if I don't speak the language?" "Is Freiburg really a fun city?" The DAAD Young Ambassadors are here to help!
DAAD Young Ambassadors are North American undergrads who have recently studied in Germany and have received training from DAAD to inform their fellow students about the various study, research and internship programs Germany has to offer, as well as a wide array of scholarship opportunities. They're also happy to share their first-hand experience through advice and tips. There are 32 Young Ambassadors in this, the program's fifth year, so you're bound to find one who shares your field of study or geographical location.
Representatives from universities and other organizations are also welcome to call on the Young Ambassadors for support at study abroad fairs, information sessions and other events related to higher education in Germany.
In 2009-2010, there are Young Ambassadors located in universities right across Canada:
-
Anne Marie Chung, University of Western Ontario
-
Steffen Janzen, University of Alberta
-
Krista Lum, Simon Fraser University
-
Justin Waghray, University of Calgary
-
Lijing Zhong, York University
Meet this year's DAAD Young Ambassadors and find out how to contact them via email at www.daad.org/?p=ambassadors2009
