DAAD is seeking a qualified, outgoing person to join its team as Assistant Information Officer for 19.25 hours/week.
This individual will help in a variety of tasks centered primarily around reaching out to students and faculty in the US and Canada to let them know of opportunities for study and research in Germany and about DAAD grants.
Responsibilities will include assisting with:
- Content management, and editorial and technical oversight of the organization’s English-language website (www.daad.org)
- Producing and creating content for weekly electronic English-language newsletter; designing and sending quarterly alumni newsletter
- Writing and distributing occasional press releases
- Coordinating production and editing/updating content of annual brochure of grants for study in Germany
- Supporting Marketing Director and others in editing and production of other informational publications
- Designing advertisements to spec as needed
- Administering DAAD North America’s Facebook Fan Page and Twitter feed
- Administering and coordinating undergraduate bloggers’ page
HTML, Dreamweaver, Photoshop and Quark skills, and database management such as Salesforce are required.
Additional administrative and/or organizational responsibilities will be determined during selection process in accordance with the applicant’s background, strengths and interests.
Successful candidates will be outgoing, detail-oriented individuals who ideally possess experience in print and web production as well as event planning. They should be native English speakers who are able to work independently as well as with a team. Knowledge of German and the German higher education system would be a plus.
This is a part-time freelance position, and pay will be computed on an hourly basis.

ERP Systems at Hof University of Applied Sciences
July 12 - 30, 2010
The first part of this course provides fundamental knowledge in logistic processes with SAP R/3 Enterprise. In the second part, a specialization on accounting or programming with the SAP R/3 system is offered. The courses offer an introduction into administrative and industrial processes, basics of logistics, knowledge about obtaining materials, producing and distributing products in the proper place and in proper quantity. Furthermore, students gain an insight in financial and asset accounting.

Designing E-Commerce with Microsoft.NET at Hof University of Applied Sciences

DAAD Chat: Introductory and Preparatory Courses at German Universities |

DAAD, via study-in.de, will hold its first monthly chat series for students interested in study in Germany on Wednesday April 21, from 10 to 11am EDT. The theme of this chat is “Introductory and Preparatory Courses at German Universities.”
Those interested in completing a Bachelor's in Germany need to do some advanced preparations. Introductory courses (Propädeutikum) and preparatory courses (Studienkolleg) are specifically designed to support new and foreign students prior to and during a Bachelor degree course in Germany.
What are the benefits of participating in a preparatory or introductory course? What does it cost to take one? How does one apply for it? Get the answers to these and more questions at the April 21 chat.
Participants will be joined by Harald Klinel, the coordinator of all preparatory courses in Germany; and Winnie Rosatis, head of the International Office at the University of Applied Sciences Fulda (which offers and organizes introductory courses).
Interested chatters may begin submitting questions to these experts now. Then, browse and vote on topics of interest to other participants. The questions with the most votes will be addressed in the live chat.

FUBiS is an intensive, academic program through which students can earn credits that may be counted towards their degrees at their home institutions. FUBiS sessions run for 4 to 6 weeks and take place both in summer and winter.

On Thursday, April 8, the 2009/10 DAAD music fellows took the stage of Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall for a concert of classical and jazz music, to help raise awareness of the work of DAAD and the DAAD Alumni Association in promoting transatlantic exchange. The occasion, Sound Understanding 2010, is DAAD and the DAAD Alumni Association's annual concert showcasing the young, talented DAAD music fellows from Germany who have spent the past year studying at music schools in the US and Canada. The music fellows are selected in a national competition among the best students of Germany's renowned music colleges.

2010 DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in German and European Studies |

Every year, the American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) awards the DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in German and European Studies in recognition of exceptional work in one of the Institute's three major areas of research: Foreign & Domestic Policy; Business & Economics; and Society, Culture & Politics. The central aim of this prize is to foster a new generation of American scholarship on Germany and encourage innovative contributions to the interdisciplinary scope of German Studies. This year's prize will be awarded in the field of the Humanities.
A jury composed of several highly respected scholars in the field is charged with selecting the winner. This year's prize carries a stipend of $5,000 and will be awarded at the Institute's Global Leadership Award Dinner in November 2010 in New York City.
As a rule, awardees must be members of a university faculty or research institute staff in the United States at mid-career. They must also be American citizens or residents. American candidates who received a doctorate in Germany may also be nominated. The chief criterion for selection is an outstanding publication record in the fields of German literature, culture, arts, and music in the post-World War II period. The Institute welcomes nominations of candidates who have made innovative contributions to the interdisciplinary scope of German Studies.
Nominations must be received no later than June 30, 2010.

DAAD is delighted to invite matriculated students and scholars to test their environmental knowledge and celebrate Earth Week. Take our 2010 quiz entitled "How Green is Germany?" and you could win a free trip to Germany. But you have to act fast—the deadline to enter is next Friday, April 30 at 12pm EDT.
Germany is certainly one of the greenest countries in the world. As a leader in environmental technology and progressive programs addressing recycling, Germany promotes a level of environmental awareness rivaled by few other nations. We would like to test matriculated students' and scholars' knowledge of how green Germany is and get them thinking about how to incorporate a “green” German experience into their future.

Nominate a DAAD Young Ambassador—Applications Due June 11 |

The 20010/11 academic year isn't far down the road. Looking for an innovative way to inform and advise new student groups about opportunities for study in Germany? This is a great program for helping returning study abroad students put their newly found knowledge and experience to good use. Nominate a DAAD Young Ambassador on your campus!
DAAD is excited to announce the latest call for applications for its Young Ambassadors Program. DAAD Young Ambassadors are undergraduate students from North America who have recently studied in Germany and are interested in promoting study in Germany at their home institutions. DAAD has 20 spots available for students from all over the US and Canada to help demonstrate to their peers what makes Germany such a unique and attractive destination for study abroad.
DAAD Young Ambassadors are responsible for organizing at least one event per semester on their campuses to promote study in Germany. Additionally, they will collaborate with their universities' study abroad offices and other German institutions in their areas to inform their fellow students on educational and research opportunities in Germany. There are short profiles of the Young Ambassadors on the DAAD website, and they are available for email inquiries about their respective German host universities, study abroad programs or about life as a student in Germany as general.
Applications must be received by June 11, 2010.
Although students may apply directly to DAAD to become a Young Ambassador, special preference will be given to candidates nominated by their university's study abroad office. (Only one student should be nominated per college or university.)

DAAD Research Ambassadors Program Accepting Applications |

Since 2005, DAAD New York has been operating its highly successful "Young Ambassadors" program, consisting of recently returned undergraduate students who have studied in Germany are willing and excited to promote Germany as a study and research destination on their campuses. In an effort to assemble a similar cadre of informed and enthusiastic experts and advisers on higher-level research opportunities in Germany, DAAD New York is pleased to announce the return of its Research Ambassadors program.
DAAD Research Ambassadors' primary role is to inform students and researchers in the USA and Canada about Germany as a research destination and to foster collaborations with German colleagues. They are a group of scholars and scientists committed to a wide range of activities to promote research in Germany, from providing information, mentoring, participating in panel discussions or information fairs, to being available to answer questions via email, hosting information events, etc. Individuals in all disciplines are invited to apply, but must have completed a total of at least 10 months conducting research in Germany at the doctoral level or above.
Priority will be given to DAAD Alumni, but other "Germany Alumni" will be accepted, including some German nationals who studied in Germany but are now living in the US or Canada.
Please apply by June 11 to become a DAAD Research Ambassador for the USA and Canada.

Deadline Change for the EMGIP - Bundestag Internship 2011 |

EMGIP - Bundestag (Èmigré Memorial German Internship Program) offers internship opportunities for US and Canadian students in the German parliament, the Bundestag. The internships are two months long in positions matching the student’s interest and experience. Interns will be placed within the Verwaltung, preferably with a Sekretariat working for their preferred Ausschuss. Aside from contributing to the respective offices, interns have the opportunity to study legislative and administrative procedures in the German parliament. Applicants for EMGIP – Bundestag should possess outstanding academic records and personal integrity as well as some knowledge of the German legislative process. Participants should be advanced undergraduates or graduate students in fields such as political science, international relations, law, history, economics or German. PhD students are not eligible. Students must be able to fully communicate in German.
The application deadline for EMGIP has changed to September 15, 2010.

Hessen ISU: Adaption Strategies to Climate Change at University of Kassel
June 19 - July 17, 2010
The Hessen International Summer University in Kassel concentrates on environmental education and research. Students may choose from two modules: an engineering module and a culture module. The engineering module includes Adaption Strategies to Climate Change, Environmental Engineering and Introduction to Earthquake Engineering. In the culture module, seminars in Intercultural Communication, German Fairy Tales and German History and Politics are offered. In addition, participants can take a German language course.

This four-week summer program of the Hessen International Summer University consists of two courses on issues related to Europe and Germany, German language courses and an attractive extracurricular program. There will be day trips to nearby sites, lectures in English and German by well-known figures in politics, economics and science, and an opening and farewell banquet.
