Once you start learning German, you may want or need to take a proficiency test. If you plan on studying at a German university, you need to find out which test is required or recommended. Before being admitted to higher education in Germany you will generally be required to take a German language proficiency test - "Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang" (DSH) or "Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache" (TestDaF). Of course, if you enroll in an International Degree Program, you will most likely be exempt from taking these tests.

You do not need to take a university language entrance examination if you have already passed one of the following tests:
- Deutsches Sprachdiplom (German Language Diploma); Level II
- Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung (Central Advanced Test)
- Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom (Intermediate German Language Diploma)
- Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom (Advanced German Language Diploma)
Tests you may need to take to find employment in Germany are:
- Prüfung Wirtschaftsdeutsch International (International Test for Business German)
- Zertifikat Deutsch (Certificate German)
- Zertifikat Deutsch für den Beruf (Certificate German for Business)
