The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is the German national agency for the support of international academic cooperation. We offer programs and funding for students, faculty, researchers and others in higher education, providing financial support to over 55,000 individuals per year. We also represent the German higher education system abroad, promote Germany as an academic and research destination, and help build ties between institutions around the world.

The New York office of the DAAD was founded in 1971 to support academic exchange between the US, Canada and Germany. We are one of 14 international branch offices. DAAD New York has three major missions:

  • To act as a bridge between US, Canadian and German universities, higher education professionals and students by providing information and assistance.
  • To administer fellowships and other programs for students and scholars in the US and Canada.
  • To contribute to Germany’s public diplomacy by promoting Germany’s academic, scientific, and cultural achievements in the US and Canada.
For up-to-date information on DAAD programs, higher education in Germany, and relevant academic and cultural events, we offer a weekly electronic newsletter.
DAAD Information Centers
DAAD has two information centers dedicated to serving the needs of students and faculty on the west coast of the United States and in Canada. They promote study and research in Germany, advise local students on funding opportunities, and build ties between German and US or Canadian universities.

GAIN - German Academic International Network
A network of German scientists and scholars in North America. GAIN holds conferences with prominent speakers and provides a forum for discussions on many levels.

GAIN PROGRAM OFFICER PART-TIME

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), located in New York City, is seeking a qualified, outgoing person to join its team as a part-time (approx. 18 hours/week) Program Officer.

The Program Officer will be working as part of the team managing the German Academic International Network (GAIN), a flourishing network of German scholars and scientists in North America. GAIN is a joint initiative of DAAD, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) and the German Research Foundation (DFG), as well as a number of associated members, including the German Rectors' Conference, the Fraunhofer Gesellschaft, the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers, the Leibniz Association and the Max Planck Society.

Responsibilities will include:
  • Writing and editing the monthly electronic German-language newsletter
  • Content management, editorial and technical oversight of the German-language website (www.gain-network.org)
  • Writing and distributing press releases
  • Organizing conferences and workshops
  • Maintaining and building the network of German researchers in North America


Requirements:
  • Knowledge of science and research landscape in Germany and the US/Canada
  • IT experience including website design (HTML) and database management
  • Fluency in German and English, native German speaker preferred
  • Outstanding communications skills
  • Excellent organization skills with great attention to detail
  • Work permit for the United States (we cannot sponsor a visa)


This is an on-site position located in New York City.

INTERNSHIP IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES / NETWORK ADMINISTRATION

DAAD New York is seeking information technologies / systems administration majors or graduate students nearing the end of their studies for internships in advanced network administration. Must speak German and have good English communication skills. The work is carried out in New York City in a Microsoft environment of under 50 users and it is a perfect foray into a professional career.

This is an excellent opportunity for an IT student to gain:
  • international working experience
  • hands-on network administration experience
Interns will have the opportunity to sharpen real world IT skills including:
  • dealing with end user issues
  • network maintenance utilizing the latest technologies
  • discussing the direction of support on a working network
A winning candidate must possess the following skills:
  • some background in MS Windows Server and familiarity with E-Mail servers
  • knowledge about firewalls, Win XP & 2003 OS, MS Office Suites
  • experience in an open-source environment
  • be a self-starter, capable of working independently and handling responsibility
The length of each internship is at least one semester (4-6 months); other time lengths can also be considered.
