DLR-DAAD Research Fellowships in Space, Aeronautics, Energy and Transportation Research

DLR–DAAD Research Fellowships is a new program implemented by the Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) and DAAD.

DLR is Germany's national research center for aeronautics and space. Its extensive research and development work in Aeronautics, Space, Transportation and Energy is integrated into national and international cooperative ventures. As Germany's space agency, DLR has been given responsibility for the forward planning and the implementation of the German space program by the German federal government as well as for the international representation of German interests. Approximately 5,700 people are employed in DLR's 29 institutes and facilities at thirteen locations in Germany.

This special program is intended for highly-qualified foreign doctoral and postdoctoral students as well as senior scientists. DLR-DAAD Fellowships offer outstanding scientists and researchers the opportunity to conduct special research at the institutes of the DLR in Germany.

New Director of Artists-in-Berlin Program

DAAD-magazin recently published an interview with Katharina Narbutovič, the new director of the Artists-in-Berlin Program. This residency program funds approximately 15 to 20 internationally known artists as well as qualified young sculptors, painters, writers and composers from abroad are invited to spend 12 months (six months in exceptional cases) in Berlin. Here they have the opportunity to continue their work undisturbed and to participate actively in the cultural life of the city.

As director, Narbutovič hopes to create even more dialogue between the artists and to encourage more artists from outside Europe to come to Berlin, she says in the interview. She has been director since September 1. Before coming into this position, the trained political scientist also worked as a cultural lecturer, journalist and translator.

Erasmus Mundus to Undergo Changes in 2009

Erasmus Mundus, a program aiming to strengthen EU and third-country cooperation in higher education, will undergo changes in 2009, the European Commission announced. The current program, which ends in December of this year, has been analyzed by the Commission, which has proposed that the next phase, running from 2009 to 2013, promote the EU’s higher education in countries outside Europe. This includes joint doctoral programs—possibly with non-European intuitions, and an increase in scholarships for EU students. The Commission will also raise the budget of Erasmus Mundus exponentially, from €230 million to €950 million.

    European Journalism Fellowships in Berlin

Each year, 10 to 15 fellowships are awarded to journalists from Eastern and Western Europe and the United States who want to spend two semesters engaging in research in Berlin. Since 1999, the program of the European Journalism Fellowships (EJF) at the Journalisten-Kolleg of the Freie Universitaet Berlin has become established as an important institution for journalists at the European level.

Each fellow pursues a custom-made program that is organized around a specific project defined by the applicant: an individual journalistic research project whose results will later be published. The objective of studies in Berlin is to broaden professional knowledge and specialized expertise while building upon previous journalistic experience. Fellows are free to take advantage of course offerings at the Berlin Universities, and to participate in events organized by other scholarly and cultural institutions in the German capital. At the same time, journalists have an opportunity to meet colleagues from Eastern and Western Europe and the United States. Weekly discussions, cultural events, excursions and an information trip through Germany round out the program.

The program begins in October 2009 and ends in July 2010.

Applicants can have journalist positions or be freelancers with more years of experience, if they have not worked in Berlin before. The most important aspect of the application is a proposal for a research-journalism project that would need to be carried out in Berlin. The application can be completed in English or German, but written German knowledge is necessary.

There are two kinds of fellowships for American journalists:

Standard Fellowships are for those with at least five years of work experience. The stipend is between 1,000 and 1,500 Euros monthly. Standard Fellowship application deadline is December 15, 2008.

The Superior Fellowship is for One outstanding journalist with a PhD degree from one of the former Allied Nations of the Second World War (CIS-States, France, Great Britain, USA) may be awarded an extraordinary scholarship from the Abgeordnetenhaus of Berlin (Berlin State Parliament) Foundation (a monthly stipend of 1,300 Euros plus accommodation) for the duration of 12 months. Applications for the Superior Fellowship are due December 10, 2008.

AICGS-DAAD Symposium on the US Election in NYC

The American Institute for Contemporary German Studies (AICGS) and DAAD would like to announce a Symposium on “After the Elections: German-American Relations in a New Era.” The Symposium, which is undertaken with the support of the DAAD New York office and Brown Brothers Harriman, will be held on Thursday, November 13 at 12:30pm to 3pm at Brown Brothers Harriman, 140 Broadway, New York Room. A light luncheon will be served.

This Symposium will feature prominent members of the academic community who have received the DAAD Prize. With the American elections just completed we will explore what lies ahead for Germany and the United States in dealing with the changes that both face. The speakers will be asked to comment on key issues and developments which will impact on how we understand each other and what "translation tools" we will need to deal with shared challenges.

Space is limited, so please RSVP by November 11 to jriester@aicgs.org or by phone (202-332-9312 ext.125). We hope you will be able to join us for what we believe will be an engaging and thoughtful discussion of very timely issues.
